my trip to queensland 2009.
January 21st, 2010for the past 6 or so years my dad has been taking his tow-truck to surfers paradise to do recovery at the indy 300/super gp and last year i got to go with him.
it turned out to be the best holiday of my life. despite some dramas that were going on in sydney i was able to get away and have possibly the best 9 days of my adult life.
i had so much fun spending the week with only adults. on the drive up dad and i stopped at my god-parents house, whom i love very much. we spent the night with them just hanging out and watching tv but it was awesome. the next morning we drove the rest of the way to surfers paradise.
the hotel was amazing. we stayed at the bairritz apartments with the rest of the recovery crew working at the gp.

we went to dinner almost every night with everyone and it was really fun to have adult conversations with them, they were all super nice to me, i’ve known some of them for years and some i had just met.
my dad and i stayed in a room with with two of his best friends bob and norm. (i’ve known bob all my life and i’ve known norm for about 10 or 11 years) it was fun to share a room with these guys and brought us all a bit closer together.

but the whole reason we were there was for the nikon supergp, we spent thursday, friday, saturday and sunday positioned on turn 8 of the track. as dad has spent the past 6 years on this same corner he made good friends in the two fire marshals on this turn, they were such nice guys, we even had a bbq with them and thier family at their hotel on the saturday night.

we didn’t much work over the weekend but the crew we were working with were awesome. dad has been working with them for years but i just met most of them that week and they instantly took me in and treated me as part of the crew.

almost everyday since we got back i’ve thought back on this holiday and the fond memories i’ll have for the rest of my life. the trip brought my dad and i closer, made me a more mature person and gave me more confidence in myself. i can only hope that the supergp is on again next year and its just as fun or even more fun than last year.
